Zoë Atherton’s thriller analysis: No Country for Old Men

Certificate: 15
Opening duration: 2:37

Sound:
The silence at the beginning means the audience concentrates on the non- diegetic dialogue, the words being to do with danger, like “killed” “gun” and “hell”. This combined with the diegetic sound of the wind whistling across the landscape creates a tense atmosphere, as it is a secluded, silent and ominous area.

Editing:
The cuts between the various shots of the landscape go with the slow pace of the narration.

Camera:
Extreme long shot: of scenery to emphasize the isolation.
Close-up shot: of some form of weapon (like an oxygen tank), which shows it is of significance and danger.

Mise-En-Scene:
Location: Very rural and secluded, begins quite dark: all adding to the unknown and mysterious atmosphere.
Costume: The man who committed a crime is dressed in black, and has a quirky black bob, which gives the impression of him being mentally unstable.

  1. dialogue, if from the film /story world, is diegetic!
Consider the mood created by slow pace.
