Zoë Atherton’s thriller analysis: The count of Monte Cristo

Certificate: PG
Opening duration: 3:49

Sound:
Non-diegetic sound: music is thriller-like: mysterious and dangerous. Gunshots, punches and swords being drawn add to the tension and action.
Diegetic sound: the horses galloping and running footsteps bring a sense of urgency and immediacy, showing the danger they are facing.

Editing:
The pace builds up and quick cuts show how rapidly things got out of hand.

Camera:
Close up: of the character ‘Edmond’ shouting “we come in peace” signifies the importance of those words as he is then shot at by the troops.
Worms-eye view: emphasizes the power and height of the Captain.

Mise-En-Scene:
Location: Characters on small boat heading toward an island, and are referred previously as “idiots” by their Captain, suggesting the Island is dangerous; and combined with the dark lit setting, it creates suspense and a tense mood.
Props: the small boat shows their vulnerability and insignificance.
