Se7en
camerawork
- majority of CUs - show things in detailed
- shallow depth of field/unfocused shots - create suspense
- fixed camera - draw more attention to the objects
- nothing shot from far distance
mise en scene
- dirts and bandage on the fingers/nails - characterisation
- low key lighting
- variety of paper cutouts/photos/writings - investigating something/evidence
- all the props look old - create enigma
editing
- most of the transitions are cross dissolves
- quicken the pace gradually
sound
- only non-diegetic sound (music?) is used - create mood
- constant drum
- loud explosion at the beginning
- key board typing sound
- metallic sound
- sound of something breaking down
- animal roaring
- scientific sound
- air detonation
- uptempo drum
- some noise
- electric guitar
- tuned voice/singing
- siren
- unpleasant sound effects throughout the sequence
Jaws
camera
- many ELSs - show the scale between the character and the background
- tracking shot of a couple
- MCU of a woman with sunset in the background
- worm's eye view when she swims around the sea
- camera comes closer to her with canted shot when she stops swimming - POV of Jaws - draw tension/unrestricted narration
- the camera always stays in the same level as surface of sea - very occasionally the cameras hit by the water - realism
- slightly low angle when she has caught by Jaws - more water hits the camera - drowning
- most of the shots of her boyfriend are LS/ELS - calm
- camera stays still with ELS when she happily jump into sea - peaceful
- camera pans as she swims - POV of Jaws?
mise en scene
- very low key lighting
- natural lighting from sunset - creates silhouette
- almost everything is silhouetted
- enabling to read her body language in silhouette when she swims
editing
- each character have same amount of shots before female character starts swimming, gradually more shots focus on her - more importance on her
- kind of cross cutting used between the female character and Jaws (POV) - suspense
sound
- only diegetic sound used before female character goes into the sea
- after POV of Jaws, starts to play non-diegetic sound - tension
- harp/mysterious music -> low pitched drum/low pitched music (decrescendo)
- high-key piano with trumpet sound effect when she is pulled by Jaws (crescendo)
- scientific sound during she tries to breath
- sound of water splashing gets louder during pulling
god.
ReplyDeleteOn 7, you just tend to list - describe. you need to provide an explanation as to why these various elements of film language were used. Jaws is better as you tend to do this more often.
